Solid Wood
When producing minimal furniture, the material selection is just as important as the design of the piece itself. We hand select each board from sustainable sources and mills that process only the highest quality material, considering colour selection, grain pattern, and board width. We use North American timber to reduce our environmental footprint and live out our sustainability convictions. Solid wood is a natural product - it varies in colour and grain depending on the origin of the tree. This means that you will have colour variations, patterns, maybe even knots in your piece, and we hope you join us in celebrating the uniqueness of this incredible natural material.
Finishes
We use hand-applied oil finishes that penetrate the wood surface, adding hardness and stain resistance without forming a superficial barrier on top. Our finishes highlight the beauty of the wood grain, while maintaining the tactile connection. Commercial strength means they withstand daily office or residential use, making them ideal for restaurants and hospitality applications, as they also allow for spot-refinishes in cases of high wear or damage. All finishes are food safe with no VOCs.
Formulated to preserve natural beauty, not alter it, each finish adds longevity to our products and insulates them from trends, which can quickly render furniture a design challenge and contribute to a “throwaway” culture.
Stone
We work with marble, granite, and travertine to produce our Carmanah Series along with custom commissions. Our standard stones are Chiselled Whistler Granite from Whistler, BC; Chiselled Skagit Granite from a quarry near Hope, BC; Cascade Coral Granite from Enderby, BC; Vancouver Island Sandstone from Valdez Island, BC; Chiselled Grenville Granite from a quarry in Saint-Nazaire, Quebec; and Vancouver Island Black Marble from the Carmanah Valley, BC.
Limited Edition Stones - Periodically we come across a limited number of stone blocks from off-cuts of non-local materials. We utilize these to save them from being disposed of. While we do not import stones, we are grateful for the opportunity to give these beautiful materials purpose.
Samples are available for viewing at our showroom in Vancouver. Other local stones and special orders are explored upon request.
