IDS VANCOUVER 2019

PORTAL

Tradeshows produce upwards of 600,000 tons of waste every year – where does it all end up? Landfills.

Lock & Mortice felt compelled to be part of changing this, and, in partnership with IDS Vancouver, has committed to a zero-waste exhibition. Portal is a window exposing an alternative world of potential and inspiration in how we think about sustainability. The dominant use of black throughout the exhibition is representative of what they feel is the dark underside of the design industry. This is the implied obsolescence of the “old” that is the natural by-product of everything new. This makes it difficult to have an honest conversation about sustainability and design. They are challenging designers and manufacturers of goods, to create products that endure in both stylistic relevance and utility so that they may be passed-on to future generations with the same due care that we ought to pass on the planet and the environment that sustains us.

By using only 98% recycled, FSC certified honeycomb paperboard with wood and steel elements reconfigured from their furniture line, Lock & Mortice has proved that changing our views on material exploration can re-prioritize sustainability in exhibition and tradeshow design. All the wood and steel will be cycled back into furniture pieces post-show.

Working in collaboration with local creative studio Colours & Shapes, experts in visual technology and projection mapping, Portal is a truly immersive experience.
