Linking Custom Furniture and Collaborative Design

Collaboration is at our core at Lock & Mortice. Our company is owned by three partners and was built on a foundation of collaboration. This teamwork drove us to hone the craft we now apply when developing our products and when bringing custom furniture to life. Listening and taking into consideration several perspectives, makes for better products and strong design.

Through our design process and iterative prototyping, we consider aesthetic form, human ergonomics, and manufacturing processes to develop products that are customized to our customers’ lives. As local manufacturers, we have the privilege of coming face to face with our clients and carefully considering their space. This connection informs our creative process and results in a product line of custom pieces carefully crafted for our end users.

Working together has led us to develop a clear direction and strong design convictions that we apply to every product. We center our approach to custom furniture around the collaborative process to ensure we build enduring products. We glean inspiration from sketches and add our own twist by stripping away frills to allow the natural wood to shine as the main character of every piece, instead of the shape or form. Every collaboration yields an entirely unique piece.

Based in Vancouver, BC, we are a multi-disciplinary studio and furniture manufacturer. We design, engineer, and create solid wood pieces for residential and commercial spaces. Our obsessively minimalist aesthetic requires the highest-grade natural woods and exacting precision to achieve a piece that is quietly beautiful in its simplicity and perfect in its execution.

Lock & Mortice only uses North American Timber. We build local for local, and constantly take inspiration from the beautiful landscape that surrounds us. The study of the natural materials found in our backyard motivates us to find ways to combine them in furniture as well. It’s this exploration of materiality that largely drives our designs.

Our pieces highlight the natural beauty of solid wood and respect its aging process. Simple designs guarantee insulation from trends and allow pieces to travel through the home and traverse styles. Made and designed for daily use, every piece celebrates the changes that come with time.

Whether we are designing for our collection or collaborating with you on a custom piece, we apply our high standards to the task.
